When we think about water in the Mediterranean, we often think about scarcity.

We think about drought, restrictions, dry summers, and the increasingly urgent need to design landscapes that can thrive with less irrigation.


Yet nature has always known something we are only beginning to rediscover: water is not only found in rivers, reservoirs, and underground aquifers.


It is all around us.


Every morning, before the sun rises high enough to warm the earth, countless droplets of water quietly appear on leaves, stones, spider webs, and grasses. This phenomenon, known as dew formation, has sustained ecosystems for millions of years, even in some of the driest places on Earth.


What if we could learn from nature and harvest that water?

This is precisely the question that led to the creation of the Warka Tower.


A Remarkable Innovation Inspired by Nature


The Warka Tower was conceived by Italian architect Arturo Vittori as a response to a very human challenge: access to clean drinking water.


The project was initially developed for rural communities in Ethiopia, where many people must walk several kilometres every day to collect water from distant sources. The idea was simple yet revolutionary: instead of transporting water, why not collect it directly from the atmosphere?


The result is a lightweight tower built primarily from natural materials such as bamboo. Rising up to ten metres high, it contains a specialised mesh suspended inside the structure. During the night and early morning hours, moisture present in the air condenses on this mesh.


Tiny droplets gradually form, merge together, and slowly trickle down into a collection basin at the base of the tower.


No electricity.

No pumps.

No complex infrastructure.

Just physics, humidity, and intelligent design.


Depending on local climatic conditions, a single tower can collect dozens of litres of water per day.



Learning from the Wisdom of Living Systems


What fascinates me most about the Warka Tower is not the technology itself, but the philosophy behind it.


It belongs to a growing movement known as biomimicry:

the practice of learning from nature's solutions

rather than trying to dominate them.


The tower draws inspiration from organisms that have mastered water harvesting over millions of years.


Desert beetles collect moisture from fog on their shells.

Spider webs capture tiny droplets suspended in the air.

Cacti channel condensation through their spines.


Even the shape of trees influences how water moves through an ecosystem.

Nature rarely fights against scarcity. Instead, it learns how to work with available resources.


The Warka Tower follows the same principle.


Rather than extracting more water from rivers or underground reserves, it simply captures water that is already present in the atmosphere.


Why This Matters for Mediterranean Gardens


At first glance, the Warka Tower may seem like a solution intended only for remote regions of Africa.


Yet I believe its underlying idea has enormous potential for Mediterranean landscapes.

Many gardens along the Italian, French, Spanish and Greek coasts experience a fascinating paradox. Summers can be extremely dry, while mornings often bring significant humidity from the sea.


Walk through a Mediterranean garden at sunrise and you will often notice droplets covering olive leaves, rosemary, lavender and grasses.


That water is usually lost as soon as the sun rises.


The Warka Tower invites us to ask a different question:


Could we design our gardens to capture

and benefit from this invisible resource?


Perhaps not necessarily through a full-scale tower,

but through structures inspired by the same principle.


Imagine a Mediterranean garden featuring:

  • a sculptural Warka-inspired tower made from bamboo and natural fibres,

  • dew-harvesting pergolas,

  • vertical woven screens that collect morning moisture,

  • water features supplied partially by atmospheric harvesting,

  • rainwater collection integrated with dew collection systems.


Instead of seeing water solely as something that arrives through pipes, we begin to see it as part of a larger ecological cycle.


More Than a Water Device


What makes the Warka Tower particularly beautiful is that it functions on several levels.


It is a practical tool.

It is an architectural landmark.

It is an educational object.


And perhaps most importantly, it changes the way we perceive our relationship with water.


For centuries, traditional Mediterranean cultures understood the value of every drop. Roman cisterns, Etruscan reservoirs, terracotta storage vessels and ingenious gravity-fed irrigation systems all emerged from a deep respect for water as a precious resource.


The Warka Tower feels like a contemporary continuation of that tradition.

Not a high-tech machine hidden underground, but a visible reminder that nature is constantly offering solutions if we take the time to observe.


Designing Gardens as Ecosystems


As landscape designers, we often focus on plants, materials and aesthetics.


Yet the future of Mediterranean gardens may depend just as much on invisible flows:

water, humidity, soil biology, pollinators and microclimates.


The Warka Tower reminds us that the most innovative ideas are not always the most complicated ones.


Sometimes innovation means paying attention.


Paying attention to the morning mist.

Paying attention to the dew resting on a blade of grass.

Paying attention to the intelligence already present in nature.


In a world increasingly challenged by climate change, perhaps the gardens of tomorrow will not simply consume fewer resources.


Perhaps they will actively harvest them from the living systems surrounding them.

And perhaps some of the most beautiful water reservoirs of the future will not be hidden beneath the ground, but quietly gathering droplets from the morning air.
