Perhaps We Have Been Copying the Wrong Nature

"Nature is based on competition."



Few scientific ideas have shaped our society more profoundly than this one.

We have built businesses around competition.

Economies around competition.

Education around competition.

Even our understanding of success often assumes that survival belongs to the strongest.


But what if this isn't actually what biology tells us?


Not because biology is wrong.

But because we have misunderstood the language used to describe it.


Evolution does not mean becoming more complex


One of the most persistent misconceptions about evolution is the idea that life constantly progresses towards greater complexity.

It doesn't...


Evolution has no direction.

It has no ambition.

It has no final destination.


Species simply change over time according to what allows them to persist in their current environment.


Sometimes this means becoming more complex.

Sometimes it means becoming astonishingly simple.

The most successful strategy is never complexity.

The most successful strategy is adaptation.


Simplicity can outperform complexity


Consider parasites.

Many parasites have actually lost organs during evolution.

Tapeworms, for example, no longer possess a digestive system.

Why?

Because living inside another organism makes digestion unnecessary.

Rather than becoming more sophisticated, they became simpler.

Evolution removed everything that had become redundant.

The result?

Tapeworms produce enormous numbers of offspring.

Their evolutionary success does not come from complexity.

It comes from adaptation to a very specific ecological niche.

The same can be said for many bacteria.

Or viruses.

Viruses are among the simplest biological entities we know.


Whether or not one considers them fully alive is still debated, but they illustrate something remarkable:

Extremely simple structures can spread extraordinarily efficiently.

Not because they are "better."

Simply because they are well adapted to the conditions in which they exist.


Nature does not reward sophistication.

It rewards fit.


The survival of the fittest is perhaps biology's most misunderstood sentence


When people hear survival of the fittest, they often imagine:

the strongest wolf,

the biggest tree,

the fastest predator.

That isn't what evolutionary biology means.


Fitness refers to reproductive success.


An organism is evolutionarily successful if it leaves descendants.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The giant dinosaurs disappeared.

Tiny insects survived.

Neither outcome says anything about superiority.

Only about adaptation.


Random does not mean meaningless


Another word that often misleads us is random.

Scientists say that mutations occur randomly.


Many people hear:

Life happens without meaning.


But that is not what biology says.


Random simply means that mutations do not occur because organisms consciously need them.

Natural selection then filters those variations through their interaction with the environment.


Randomness does not imply chaos.

It simply means that variation is not guided by a predetermined intention.


Yet from these countless interactions, patterns begin to emerge.

Complexity emerges.

Adaptation emerges.


Life becomes increasingly ordered—not because it follows a predefined plan,

but because living systems continuously respond, adjust and evolve.


Perhaps this is one of nature's most profound lessons.

Meaning is not always something that exists before the journey.

Sometimes it is something that emerges because of the journey.


Nature has no agenda.

Yet remarkably, order continuously emerges.


Perhaps the real engine of life is not competition


Competition exists.

Nobody disputes that.

Predators hunt.

Plants compete for light.

Animals compete for mates.

But this is only half of biology.


Life also depends on astonishing levels of cooperation.


Trees exchange nutrients with fungi.

Our bodies cannot function without trillions of microorganisms.

Lichens are literally two different organisms living as one.

Even complex cells originated through ancient symbiosis, when one bacterium began living inside another—the basis of the endosymbiotic theory that explains the origin of mitochondria.


Perhaps evolution is less a story of domination...

and more a story of relationships continually being renegotiated.


Nature has agreements.


Not contracts.

This may be the lesson we overlook.


In nature, cooperation lasts as long as it remains mutually beneficial.


When conditions change,

relationships change.

No resentment.

No ego.

No obligation.

Just adaptation.


Our societies often work differently.

We create contracts.

Five-year strategies.

Rigid organisational charts.


We become loyal to plans rather than reality.


Sometimes we continue investing in systems that have already stopped making sense simply because abandoning them feels like failure.


Nature does not appear to suffer from this problem.

It continuously lets go.

Not because it lacks commitment.

Because reality has changed.


What if resilience isn't about strength?


Perhaps resilience isn't about becoming stronger.

Perhaps it isn't even about becoming more complex.


Perhaps resilience is simply the ability to remain in conversation with reality.


To continually reorganise relationships according to present conditions.

Without ego.

Without attachment.

Without the illusion that there was ever a final destination.


Maybe biomimicry has focused too much on copying nature's forms.

Perhaps it is time to learn from its philosophy.

Not survival of the strongest.

Not survival of the smartest.

But the continuous emergence of relationships that still make sense today.


We rarely build societies from reality.

We build them from the stories we tell about reality.


For more than a century, we have repeated the same story about nature.

Nature is competitive.

Nature rewards the strongest.

Evolution always moves towards greater complexity.

Survival belongs to those who dominate.


But what if biology never actually said this?


We don't build societies from reality.

We build them from the stories we tell about reality.


Before we build cities, we build narratives.

Before we design organisations, we design beliefs.

Before we create brands, landscapes or economies, we decide — consciously or unconsciously — what we believe the world is.


Those beliefs become structures.


For decades, we have inherited a particular story about nature.

That nature is competitive.

That evolution rewards the strongest.

That progress means becoming bigger, faster and more complex.

Whether or not these ideas accurately reflect evolutionary biology is one question.


What interests me even more is another one:

What happens when an entire civilisation starts believing that this is how life works?


If we believe that survival depends primarily on competition,

we build competitive organisations.


If we believe that success belongs to those who dominate,

we celebrate domination.


If we believe that resilience comes from control,

we design systems that try to eliminate uncertainty rather than learn from it.


Our stories quietly become our institutions.

Yet the living world tells a far more nuanced story.

Nature does not negotiate with ideology.

It simply continues.

Species cooperate.

Then compete.

Then cooperate again.

Relationships emerge, disappear and reorganise according to present conditions.


There is no permanent alliance.

No eternal enemy.

No ego defending yesterday's decisions.

Only continuous adaptation.


Not because nature is moral.

Not because nature is kind.


But because life persists by remaining in relationship with reality as it exists now.


Perhaps this is where our own systems begin to struggle.

Human societies often become loyal to plans rather than to reality.

We sign contracts that outlive their purpose.

We defend institutions that no longer serve life.

We continue projects because they once made sense, even when the conditions that created them have disappeared.


Sometimes our greatest strength becomes our greatest rigidity.


Nature rarely suffers from this problem.

It lets go.

Not because it is weak.

But because reality has already changed.


This changes the way I think about design.

About gardens.

About branding.

About businesses.

About communities.


Perhaps the role of design is not to impose order upon life.

Perhaps it is to create the conditions in which life can continue adapting.


A resilient garden is not the one that resists every change.

It is the one that continues evolving with the seasons.

A resilient brand is not the one that never changes.

It is the one that remains truthful as the world changes around it.

A resilient society may not be the one with the strongest institutions.

It may be the one that knows when to transform them.


Perhaps the deepest lesson nature offers us is not efficiency.

It is humility.


The word humility shares its roots with humus — the living soil.

Not by coincidence, but by etymology.


To be humble is not to think less of ourselves.

It is to remember where we come from.


We are not outside nature.

We are one expression of it.


When we forget this, we begin trying to control life.

When we remember it, we begin participating in life.

And perhaps that changes everything.


A final thought


The greatest misunderstanding may not lie in biology itself.

It may lie in the metaphors we inherited from it.


Because the words we choose shape the systems we build.

It is one of the most important lessons branding has taught me.


And perhaps...

if we begin describing nature differently,

we may also begin designing our societies differently.


The greatest act of biomimicry may not be technological.

It may be narrative.
